rich
same party long time CDR
a very special attitude: very ignorant towards local artists. interested in art and culture in a very representative sense. as long as good promotion. artist has to serve the city. not interested in debates. if artist in their work, make some kind of proposal that is controversial. they would never "interfere". its a kind of censorship. a kind of hegemonic approach.
don't have national funding. all have to apply. always juries. half of it are politicians.
need a research
kulture publishes this every year. summary of what the city engages in the arts.
not to be too negative. its everywhere. the public funding. special tradition in the visual arts. performance arts not so significant.
six case studies
a special approach
as artists do this research. create this possibility that there might be a dialogue.
actual debates going on
Rike - our press woman.
what is the research part?
or are we into a real thing? at the end of the two weeks is does not have to be ready.
this time

Phrases
What You as AN artist - produce questions about art your concerns... For example: What is your attitude to innovative work? To work which is controversial? which raises uncomfortable questions about the social state of things.
Will want to know more about the project, the context, the questions that we are going to ask.
Case study -- doesn't need to bring out the full debate. Bring out idea, media-supported. Focus on a couple of people. and just try to convince
Public debates are not recordable or publishable on the internet.
connection between arts and the public
in city of dusseldorf, what we expect
and what we see is the connection between artists and politicians.
people on the board of FFT.
kind of intimate situation -- intimate talk. tv setup is quite frightening. who's afraid of a shitstorm?
question of visibility vs. what can be said. how you arrange things... behind closed doors. never talk to journalists. would be absolutely no go. exposure is a kind of poison there. turns a public in to a private discussion moment.
very catholic region. reminds of ceremonies they have in a church.
by the end of the week at the latest
prepared a list of politicians we will address
She will prepare list
We will prepare questions.
Dance:
Bertram Müller - ex-tanzhaus nrw director, he just retired, always very outspoken and in Dusseldorf since a very long time. Nobody knows the politicians better than him. If he would be available, he would be amongst the first people to talk to. Maybe not a person to appear in the actual talk but he could be very helpful to make contacts to politicians.
might not have a particular viewpoint, but has been struggling for dance with politicians. a lot of experience. knows many people. talk about research we are doing. might have a bit more time. he is out of the business. write to him. need a schedule
contact link: https://www.facebook.com/bertram.muller.98
Raimund Hoghe - he would be something completely different.. international working. older generation. dramaturg of Pina Bausch. much more present in Paris, NY, etc. (then in dusseldorf, from, based and lives in dusseldorf). very charming, very interesting person. will have a position to this question. debate about dusseldorf or ideas about politics and art. strong opinion about dusseldorf. city kind of ignored his work for a long time.
contact link: http://www.raimundhoghe.com
VA Wölfl, Neuer Tanz - has his own working place in Dusseldorf. living pure luxury. tough person to talk to. shows in D only like 2X a year or so. Otherwise, is on international circuit. Performs in his own space. Around 60 years old. Attitude is 'coming from a different time'

Theatre:raStefan Schmidtke - Dramaturg at Schauspielhaus (he will leave soon but made a lot experiences with the city of Dusseldorf). Swedish artistic director of Schauspielhaus. Because of burnout could not continue. Managing Director has to leave. They will install two new people. Stefan, who is a dramaturg, working internationally. Knows the Dusseldorf situation from a speciic position. Need or Urge for representation. Brought russians. big projects. Very well received, tho had great difficulty with audience. It was maybe too much internationalism. Only so much audience in Dusseldorf. Small city, in a way. Very common strategy to get credit, etc. position themselves with strong artistic position--- but then it did not work out, as they had hoped for... He was very much at the front, talking with audience AND with politicians, and public. He has strong opinion in a negative way about the Dusseldorf
Gilla Becker - freelance Dramaturg, ex-FFT, in Dusseldorf since ever, knows the city very well
no clear link for her to contact her with
Michael Schmidt - freelance director, site-specific work
no clear link for him, to contact him with
hpss, Ilanit Margashak-Riegg & Frank Römmele - not from D. make animations and live performance works.

Ingo Toben, freelance director

Visual Arts:
(by the way - until Sunday there is the "Rundgang" at the Akademie, if you have the time, please come over and have a look: http://www.kunstakademie-duesseldorf.de/?id=370Gregor Jansen - director of Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, knows probably "everybody" in town and is a really nice guy to talk to.Thomas Rieger - General manager of Konrad Fischer Galerie, one of the most reknowned galleries in Dusseldorf, approximation festival, salon des amateurs (and also a good friend), he knows all the artistsRita McBride, Artist, director of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf - she is new in this position. first woman is director at this academy. is working with people on dialogueMarkus Ambach (successful artist from Dusseldorf but almost never working in Dusseldorf, very experienced with the city of Dusseldorf)Mischa Kuball (artist in Dusseldorf, working mostly in Cologne, Ruhrgebiet and elsewhere)Stefan Schneider (visual artist, musician, in contact to Schauspielhaus and FFT)
Politicians:
Grosse-Brockhof (Ex-"Kulturdezernent", friend of the arts, did great things for Dusseldorf, retired) - could approach with a certain amount of trust. Was active and engaged when FFT was founded. Head of local arts administration. Very open, very engaged man. Also from the conservative party, but very different type of politician. Was trying to set up private/public partnerships.
Friedrich Georg Conzen (mayor, head of the arts council, rich man with a lot of power)Dirk Elbers (the Lord Mayor of Dusseldorf, most of the artists would hate him)(all of them CDU members)and many more...
HOW TO APPROACH THESE PEOPLE
